Testimonials:

“Looking for additional training over the winter, my search turned up the River Wind Kayak site.  Doing a little research, I discovered the owner, Tom Nickels, is a very well-known and respected instructor, recently relocated from the DC area.  I communicated extensively with Tom prior to my trip.  I would be the only one in the class.  Tom was extremely flexible and developed a curriculum that would meet my training goals in the allotted time.”

“Tom is an excellent, patient coach who adapts his teaching style to the student’s learning style.  For me, it was breaking the skills into their basic mechanics.  By understanding what each part of the stroke did, I could “see” exactly how to perform it correctly and where to correct if it didn’t.  In addition, to start me towards my goal of becoming a future instructor, Tom incorporated teaching methods in my overall lesson plan, making the training seamless.  By understanding how to instruct someone properly, I could also see how to refine my own stroke further.

Not only did he further refine my skills, he challenged me to reach higher.  I had a recently acquired my roll.  To make it more realistic, he gave me a scenario of capsizing while paddling in current.  When I rolled up successfully, Tom was extremely encouraging and then challenged again, building my confidence in the newly acquired skill.  With each well-done skill, he added extra components to increase the skill level further.  This helped me solidify my skills and critical thinking.”
“The area around Neptune Beach is an excellent place to train.  Lots of variable conditions that are not reliably encountered in the Baltimore/DC area.  Tom Nickels is an excellent instructor.   He is extremely clear in his instructions and demonstrations, encouraging while pushing to achieve more, a perfect way to to learn!”
